SAS Merchandise Data Integration removes spaces from records during the creation of the old_merch_10_yyyy.txt file. When you use the hier_change process to reclassify parent merchandise members, a new merch10 product file with updated parentage is created. During the macro program _substitute that changes parent merchandise members, a compress function removes spaces from all character attribute fields. The parent merchandise change along with the removed spaces are present in the resulting merch10 input file called old_changed_merch_10_yyyyww.txt.
